No one has ever died from acupuncture used by a trained and licensed practitioner. That's not a bad record when you consider that the treatment is supposedly over 2,500 years old. Needles generally do not cause bleeding or pain, and the needles used are single-use. Acupuncturists are trained on the exact position, angle and insertion depth of acupuncture needles to avoid any injury.
One of the great things about acupuncture is that there are no side effects other than occasional bruising
This is the most frequently asked question about acupuncture because many people associate needles with pain. Acupuncture needles are about the thickness of a hair, so insertion is nearly painless. After insertion, the doctor will bring the needle to the appropriate depth. Then you usually feel a very unique sensation ranging from tingling, heaviness, warmth or none at all. Everyone's experience is different. If you have any discomfort, let your doctor know and they will adjust the needle accordingly.
It depends on the condition being treated. Although acupuncture points are found throughout the body, needles are usually placed on the extremities from the elbows to the hands, and from the knees to the feet. Other common areas include the abdomen, back, and ears.
Needles are individually packaged and sterilized by the manufacturer. They are only opened when they are ready for use, and each needle is then disposed of in a medical waste container.
